The Comparison of French Educational System and Indonesian Educational System

Education is one of the most important thing for humans today. The ground of all this modern technology that exist in this time is caused by the activity of education. Educational system can be one of the biggest thing that makes differences between a country and another country in all aspects. A country that has a good educational system mostly became good in all aspect too. Education is considered to be one of the biggest treasures in every country. However, its quality and importance is different throughout the world.

France and Indonesia are the countries that has beautiful view if you just want to spend your vacation time in both countries, even though all know that France has a lot more better places, but Indonesia can not be underestimated, too. However, both of them are also obviously have so many differences in all aspects, included educational system. Both countries considered education as an important thing for their citizens, but how they applicate it for their citizens are so different.

France as a develop country had ever been one of the best country with its educational system that well organized that offer the highest educational system for the students. While, Indonesia as a developing country still has problems in its educational system. Even though, both countries's education are organized by their goverments, but we can see that the governments of the countries have different performances in doing their jobs. As an Indonesian, I think Indonesia's goverments might be have the difficulty in doing their job because Indonesia has wider area and more population than France's. However, if they want to try to work harder I concern they can improve their educational system become better.

Specifically, I will compare the educational system in France and Indonesia in this article.

1. The Obligatory of Education

Education in both France and Indonesia are obligatory for children. French goverment require education for children between the ages of 6 up to 16 which supported by their law “La loi d’orientation sur l éducation No. 89-486 daten on July 10th, 1989" that gives free of charge for education in France for French children. Meanwhile, the Indonesian national education system is regulated in the number: 20, 2003, about the national education system. Indonesian goverment also offer free education for children, yet this time in Indonesia, as my country, I found that students now have to pay for education in JHS, SHS, and University. Even though French goverment made free education, but some of student also paid plenty of money for some needs.

Either French and Indonesia also offer unexpensive tuition for students who study in public schools. But, there are also private schools that has more expensive tuition for students who studying there. It depends on the private schools.

2. The Level of Education

French educational system is divided into the three stages of enseignement primaire (primary education), enseignement secondaire (secondary education), and enseignement supérieur (higher education). In French higher education, the following degrees are recognized by the Bologna Process (EU recognition): Licence and Licence Professionnelle (bachelor's degrees), and the comparably named Master and Doctorat degrees. In Indonesia, there is no much differences within France, Indonesian educational sistem also divided into the four stages, included pendidikan pra-sekolah (Pre-schools education), pendidikan dasar (primary education), pendidikan menengah (secondary education) and pendidikan tinggi (higher education).

a. Primary Education

In France, basic education begins at a kindergarten level (ecole maternelle) as a preschool rate. Children who are two years old can go to kindergarten. At this educational level, children were introduced into the practice of life in groups, simple skills and letter introduction and numbers. The kindergarten teaching system started at 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

That adjusted to her parents who were working from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. School activity is free on Saturdays and Sundays. As long as the children are in the classroom they are completely under the nurture and guidance of the teacher, there will be lunch break and the children will be given lunch.
After finished the kindergarten, children is going to attend primary school (ecole primaire). Primary school begins at six years of age and goes on for five years, so, there are five levels:

1. Cours préparatoire (CP) or 11ème – age 6 to 7 years old
2. Cours élémentaire (CE1) or 10ème – age 7 to 8 years old
3. Cours élémentaire (CE2) or 9ème – age 8 to 9 years old
4. Cours moyen 1 (CM1) or 8ème – 9 to 10 years old
5. Cours moyen 2 (CM2) or 7ème – 10 to 11 years old

In elementary schools, children start to leart a bit of everything, Grammar, History, Math and sometimes English. Since education in France is obligatory for children between the ages of 6 to 16 years old, this level of education is free and compulsory for children. The children can decide if they want to have a lunch in school or to go home to take the lunch from their parents. To have a lunch in school, their parents have to pay the cost.

Basic Education in Indonesia is quiet similar from France's. Children have to go to kindergarten commonly for about 2 years, start from the ages of 5 to 7 years old. In kindergarten, children will start to learn about numbers, letters, and songs. After finish the kindergarten, children will go to elementary school. In Indonesia, to get into the elementary school children have to be 7 years old of age. There are 6 levels and all of levels are called from first grade (Kelas 1) to sixth grades (Kelas 6).

b. Secondary Education

Secondary education in France is distinguished to two schools, they are College (as junior high school) and Lycee (as senior high school). In College, the student need to pass four levels, there are:

1. 6ème – 11 to 12 years old
2. 5ème – 12 to 13 years old
3. 4ème – 13 to 14 years old
4. 3ème – 14 to 15 years old

All pupils are accepted; there is no entrance exam or requirements for state schools. At the end of the year in college, the children are given a chance to go to the high school (Lycee). There is also no charge for college and the textbooks are provided for free. The syllabus aims to give all pupils a general education and consists of French, mathematics, history/geography, civics, biology, physics, technology, art, music, and physical education. Over the four years in the college, the more academic students tend to choose to take more general classes while the less academic tend to take more vocational classes.

The upper middle education (lycee) is spent three years, which is: first class and two and terminal classrooms by maintaining a fundamental education. Since the first year there have been three major studies: literature, natural learning science and industrial engineering and engineering science. At the end of the education at lycee's level, a graduate student who graduated from the university was eligible for admission to a university or high school admission. A professional school is the same as a vocational school in Indonesia, giving a professional education after graduating from a secondary school education and a theory of two to three years. Usually during the second year it was given a practice of practice at school and company. Nevertheless, both college and lycee are both intended to prepare students for the baccalaureat test.

There are no many differences between secondary school in France and Indonesia. In Indonesia, its secondary education also consists of two, which are Junior High School and Senior High School. In Junior high school, the students need to finish 3 years of study and at the end of the year, the students have to pass the national examination which is used for enter the Senior High School.

The upper high schools in Indonesia commonly is distinguised into Senior High School (SMA) and Vocational High School (SMK). In senior high schools, there are basically  two fields which are science and social snowledges. In vocational high school, the children is offered so many technic skill and the priority of a vocational high school commonly to prepare the students for the job so on.

c. Higher Education

A baccalauréat or foreign equivalent guarantees access to a publicly funded university, although the very best students take another one or two years of private studies, prepatory classes, or prépas, so they can sit for an entrance exam (concours) into the handful of prestigious schools known collectively as les grandes écoles for engineering, business, and politics or administrative studies. Read more in Expatica's guide to French higher education and universities in France.

To enter higher education in France, students need to prove their French is at a level that will enable them to undertake the course of their choice; this might be done via a written and oral test.

As far as I concern, the educational levels in France and Indonesia is queit similar. But, over all, French educational system is still better than Indonesian. Considering France is a develop country and Indonesia is a developing country I think we can know why French education system is a lot more better than Indonesian.
